A lawsuit has been filed against state representative Robin Comey, her husband and the restaurant that allegedly overserved her last March, when Comey struck multiple vehicles and flipped her Honda Civic in Hartford.
According to the complaint, John Green was in a 2003 Lincoln Navigator travelling west on Capitol Ave in Hartford; Comey was travelling east. As they were approaching each other coming from opposite directions, Comey “veered right and collided with a motor vehicle parked on the eastbound side of Capitol Ave causing her Honda Civic to flip over and enter into the westbound lane of Capitol Ave wherein it struck the drivers side of the Plaintiff (Green) vehicle.”
The lawsuit lists a series of injuries allegedly suffered by Green, such as loss of two teeth, cervical strain, right shoulder impingement, hip and lumbar strains.
Comey failed a sobriety test at the scene, with blood alcohol tests showing a reading of .1446 and .14. She was arrested and charged with operating under the influence.
After the incident Comey was removed from her assigned committees at the Capitol, and released the following statement:
“I want to apologize to my constituents, my colleagues in the CT General Assembly, my family and friends for my DUI arrest on Thursday night. After much reflection and with the support of my family, starting today, I will begin treatment to better understand the disease that is addiction and to get the help I recognize I need. I am deeply grateful in advance to everyone for giving me the time and support I need.”
It was the second statement she made following an incident related to alcohol.
In 2021, Comey made national news when video if her speaking in the legislature was picked up by last night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! In the video, Comey stumbled through a speech, often incoherent and had trouble speaking in complete sentences, before colleagues came to help her.
“I suddenly and unexpectedly began to feel unwell,” she wrote in a statement after the incident. “This was due to several factors, including anxiety, exhaustion, and regrettably, the wine I had with dinner. This type of behavior is not typical for me. I take full responsibility for my error in judgement.”
According to state records, Comey was given notice of this lawsuit via certified mail, and the return receipt dated January 30.
On February 1, Comey filed with the state for re-election for the 102nd district legislative seat.
The complaint also names Comey’s husband, David Steinman, as the owner of the vehicle, and Red Rock Tavern and its permittee, Donald Mancini, for allegedly overserving.
