What – The Grey Goat Farmtique, a quaint store featuring the work of local artisans from soap and candles to pies and fudge from around the state, is now open They also serve simple lunches, such as soup and deviled egg flights.

Who – Johnathan Hunt, who left a career in healthcare administration to pursue this dream. Hunt sold his home in East Haven to purchase this property, the long standing Libby’s Excuse Room, which is now a mixed use building, with residential upstairs and the store below.

Where – 11 North Branford Road, Branford CT 06405.

Hours – Wednesday and Thursday, 10-6; Friday and Saturday 10-7; Sunday 10-4, Closed Monday and Tuesday

About – This place is really cool. Jonathan Hunt, in addition to his former career in healthcare, also made jewelry that he sold at local fairs. In doing so, he met countless other artisans, and this store serves as a way to help sustain those working in the field.
Interestingly, while many artisans of items like candles and homemade candies often must go from fair to fair for exposure and profit, Hunt helps them by working in a more traditional business manner, paying them wholesale prices like a traditional retailer. This helps guarantee a profit for the craftsmen, as opposed to renting space and hoping for sales as is the more common method.

For us, some things stood out. A variety of fudge options, one of which was pistachio, which we can’t ever turn down, are amazing. Pies fill the small fridge, and we suspect in time a larger fridge will be needed to fill the demand that has existed in the area since Sherry’s Bakery closed. And as the options and crafts change, one can make it a regular stop as the selection will often turnover.
There are plans to add outside seating and more options in time, but until then, there are tables to relax, grab a coffee and snack or a light lunch in a quaint, aromatic setting.

We suggest checking out the Facebook page here for updates on offerings, food and specials. The weekend of June 2, Hunt is offering $2 pie slices, something we very much suggest you try.
